and they obeyed him
إِنَّهُمْ
innahum
Indeed, they
كَانُوا۟
kānū
were
قَوْمًۭا
qawman
a people
فَـٰسِقِينَ
fāsiqīna
defiantly disobedient
﴾54﴿
فَلَمَّآ
falammā
So when
ءَاسَفُونَا
āsafūnā
they angered Us
ٱنتَقَمْنَا
intaqamnā
We took retribution
مِنْهُمْ
min'hum
from them
فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ
fa-aghraqnāhum
and We drowned them
أَجْمَعِينَ
ajmaʿīna
all
﴾55﴿
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ
fajaʿalnāhum
And We made them
سَلَفًۭا
salafan
a precedent
وَمَثَلًۭا
wamathalan
and an example
لِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
lil'ākhirīna
for the later (generations)
﴾56﴿
وَلَمَّا
walammā
And when
ضُرِبَ
ḍuriba
is presented
ٱبْنُ
ub'nu
(the) son
مَرْيَمَ
maryama
(of) Maryam
مَثَلًا
mathalan
(as) an example
إِذَا
idhā
behold
قَوْمُكَ
qawmuka
Your people
مِنْهُ
min'hu
about it
يَصِدُّونَ
yaṣiddūna
laughed aloud
﴾57﴿
