The honour of Adam (as) and the disobedience of Iblees

After creating Adam (as), Allah instructed the Angels and Iblees to prostrate to him. This was not so that they worship Adam (as), but to acknowledge his status as higher than all of them. All the Angels prostrated except for Iblees (Satan/Shaitan). He refused out of arrogance and became a disbeliever!

Allah asked Iblees "What prevented you (O Iblees) that you did not prostrate when I commanded you?"

Iblees said: "I am better than him (Adam (as)), You created me from fire and him You created from clay."

Allah then disgraced and expelled Iblees from Paradise. He also told Adam (as) that Iblees is an enemy of yours, do not let him deceive you and get you removed from the goodness (Paradise) you are in.

Lesson:

He should never be arrogant and look down at people thinking we are better than them. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”  He (PBUH) describes arrogance as when you reject the truth and despise people.

Iblees’s promise

Iblees requested Allah to let him live until the day of Judgement, so he could show how he would lead astray all generations of Adam (as) except a few.

Allah said to Iblees that those who are my true worshippers, You (Iblees) will have no authority over them. You will not be able to control them.

Allah granted Iblees time until the day of Judgement. Iblees blamed Adam (as) for being removed from Paradise, and so he became the biggest enemy of Adam (as) and mankind. Iblees said, he will sit and wait against human beings and lead them astray from the straight path. He will come to them from in front of them and behind them, from their right and from their left. This means he will misguide humans in different ways, when you least expect it.

We must remember that Iblees is our greatest enemy and we should never listen to his whispers. We should always ask Allah to protect us from him.
